, larry, the company, carnival, has told us that a number of their executives and their staff will be coming out to meet you on board as well as members from customs and boarder patrol agents. have they -- have you seen a big presence in terms of how the ship has responded to this emergency? how they've informed you? have you been mustered to prepare for an emergency, or do you feel like you're sort of on your own out there? >> we haven't really seen much carnival presence other than the normal, i mean, the ship's captain who will make an announcement and then -- make an announcement and after that the passengers just stand around and say, okay, what did you get out of that, what are they really trying to tell us because we know they're not telling us everything. >> and they also -- they mentioned to us in the press conference, larry, there's only been one report of someone who was ill who was taken off the ship, but in the conditions that you were just describing to us live on board the ship you are on, raw sewage sloshing about, mattresses soaked in sewage, backed-up showers

everywhere. that's what this storm chaser has seen in hattiesburg. he's joning us on the telephone. john, i am here as well with our meteorologist chad myers. tell us what you saw. >> good evening, breanna. i originally picked up the tornado as it met out of marion county, mississippi. there was an initial report that came out of their emergency management that the tornado had struck several homes and people. from there i was able to pick it up about ten miles to the west of hattiesburg and tracked it into town. the tornado itself on the west side of the interstate was indeed larger than the eastern side of the interstate. we've been able to go back and look at our video in the last couple of hours since the tornado moved through at about 5:10 p.m. central time. i didn't hear sirens over there but as we moved into the downtown area towards the college campus, those sirens were loud and proud. i also want to give a shout out to the local fire department. as the tornado was paralleling highway 98 and moving into the city, they were out there blocking traffic to keep folks from driving into th

for joining us. i'm fredricka whitfield. the top stories we're following for you right now, the vatican is sapphiring back against media reports on sex, money and gay priests calling them unverified or completely false would if italian publications claim pope benedict decided to resign the same day he received an explosive report on a gay lobby lurking in the vatican. cnn's senior international correspondent ben wedeman is in rome. >> they are blasting in uncharacteristically strong terms, fredricka, are these reports, reports that appeared in a daily newspaper, "la repubblica" and a week live magazine panorama which suggests that indeed this group of three cardinals who were assigned by pope benedict to look into wrongdoing in the vatican found or allegedly uncovered, according to these publications a network of gay priests within the vatican who were being blackmailed according to these reports by a network of male prostitutes in rome. now, the vatican is roundly denying that these reports taking place, accusing the italian media of trying to influence the conclave, that group of 116

of washington's host. for the rest of us, the white house is pointing out how spending cuts in almost every federal program and department are going to affect each state. let's go to a couple of them. for instance, north dakota, it stands to lose funding for ten of its public schools. and 200 kids will be cut from head start. 2,000 civilian defense employees will face furlough. in ohio, that state stands to lose 350 teachers and cut 2,500 preschoolers from head start. 26,000 defense furloughs are expected there as well. to california now. 320 schools are going to lose funding. 64,000 defense furloughs. almost 16,000 fewer children will be vaccinated in that state. pretty tough to see those numbers. in fact, i want to bring in my cnn colleague, wolf blitzer in washington and ali velshi here in new york as well. ali, let me start with you. the numbers seem to be staggering when you look at them state by state. overall when you hear $85 million to hit on friday, people across the country might say, that's a good start. but it's not -- it doesn't stop there. there's a lot more to it than that.

. pistorius' bail hearing is over for the day. cnn's robyn curnow joins us with more. good morning, robyn. >> reporter: good morning. and it was that testimony, wasn't it, it was those words, it was that explanation that people have been waiting for since valentine's day, perhaps that small explanation at least allowing some south africans to hold onto hope that their icon was, indeed, telling the truth, that he thought that she was a burglar, that this was a terrible misunderstanding. this affidavit here that i'm holding in my hand paints a very emotional, sad, tragic picture of what happened to oscar, he says, that night. he didn't have his prosthetic legs on. he was scared, he was terrified, and reeva was in the toilet, which was apparently a separate room from the bathroom, and we did hear the state saying earlier on that it was just over a meter wide by a meter wide, and so she must have been terrified because these bullets were coming in this small space. there's nowhere she could have gone. whether or not he killed her deliberately as the state argues it was premeditated or he argu

doppler radar i am imagines and what the national weather service is telling us. forest county and jones county in mississippi, these storms are moving to the east-northeast a good 40, 45 miles per hour. you're under a tornado warning. it's in southwest alabama, choctaw county, clark county, washington county. we have as many as four warnings. previous hour or two we have had four or five warnings, nothing materializing from that and now we're getting damage reports. the system is going to continue to almost strike fear in many residents of the deep south into the overnight period because this system continues to churn. now, this is just one image. let me show you the radar picture. this is the southern edge of the frontal system that actually stretches all the way up to where blizzard warnings are in effect for areas of the upper midwest. eventually this is all going to move to the same area that was hit, of course, with, you know, one, two, even three feet of snowfall. that's a flood concern. as we go further into time, we can get a little closer. these tornado watch boxes will eventua

africa. we've got just a few seconds for our "end point" of the morning. start for us, chris, what is your takeaway of the day? >> my big takeaway is hero worship and that's what you have with oscar pistorius, we put this guy on a pedestal, he might not have been the best guy off the field but he was a guy who was very good at what he did and so we kind of ignored a lot of the early warning signs here and also on a personal note i want to wish my dad a happy birthday. >> oh, very sweet. the fact that he is a hero in south africa, will that play a role in what kind of a sentence, if any, he gets and what kind of bail, if any, he gets? >> i think we're ahead of the game when we talk about sentence. we're only at bail and -- >> says the defense attorney. carry on, counselor. >> thank you. but my takeaway from this is whatever kind of case it may be, when it involves criminal law in a prosecution, whether it's in south africa or the united states we can't lose sight of the most important principles, presumption of innocence, burp and reasonab burden of proof and reasonable doubt. there

shots at a van carrying seven people. they were also charged with using firearms while under the influence of alcohol. the charges had been dropped but were reinstated days before the pistorius case broke out. inside the hot, stuffy courtroom the judge called him to grill him about his handling of the case against the olympic athlete asking him "did you request records from reeva steenkamp's cell phone, did she receive text messages between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m.?" both his response, "i don't know." when final arguments got under way in the bail hearing the defense insisted the evidence shows oscar pistorius did not commit murder saying, if pistorius really wanted to kill his girlfriend, he would have done it in the bedroom, that her empty bladder is consistent with someone simply getting up and going to the restroom in the middle of the night. they say that steenkamp probably locked the door frantically as she heard pistorius shouting at a burglar and insists pistorius carried her downstairs to take her to the hospital desperate to save her life. the defense argues that oscar pi

, south africa. tell us what happened in that courtroom today. are people happy with this bail decision? >> reporter: the one person who is happy who walked past us just a few minutes ago was his lawyer, barry roux. nic robertson asked him are you pleased? he said yes, i am pleased. there was a strange bail proposal. he is not allowed to drink alcohol. he put it to oscar pistorius's lawyer, what about that bail condition that he's not allowed to drink alcohol. he said that's fine. oscar doesn't drink. i'm hearing in my ear that you are bringing up pictures that we showed you just a short moment ago. these are the pictures of oscar pistorius leaving the magistrate's court here in a silver land rover. the windows are tinted. you can probably see our cameraman trying to get a shot. we get a few brief seconds. oscar is in the back seat swashed in the middle. his uncle with him as he makes his way out of the pretoria traffic jam where we are. he is released from bail. he's not allowed to go to the house where the crime took place. he has a few other houses but a get a sense from his family f

protective foot covering. robyn curnow is covering the trial for us in pretoria, south africa. >> reporter: good morning, we've just seen oscar pistorius drive past us in a police van, sirens blaring, the police had covered the windows, you know, cameras literally rushing to try and get a picture of him. they didn't. but today, despite his really, really sad quite traumatized demeanor in the past few days, today i must say he seemed quite confident in court. he was at least sitting up straight. he wasn't hunched over. his hands buried in his head, as has been the case in the past few days and i think good reason in a way. his family and himself to be confident because as you mentioned, his defense team really punching holes in the state's evidence. in a way discrediting them, even weakening their evidence. so does that change the ball game? will the magistrate soften his views? will he give him bail? he'll appear tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. local time as that decision is made. >> robyn curnow from south africa. we want to bring in call callan, good morning, paul. >> good morning. >> the story k
